Since its founding in 1972 by Harland Stonecipher, Pre-Paid Legal Services Inc. had paid more than $140 million to more than 100,000 lawyers who helped the customers of Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc.

Pre-Paid Legal is one of the first companies in the country to provide prepaid legal services and surprisingly still remains in the forefront. It is the country’s only corporation devoted entirely to developing and marketing prepaid legal services.

The company develops, underwrites and markets their various legal service plans. The increasing need for legal services and the rising costs of attorney’s fees are the reasons why Pre-Paid Legal design legal insurance plans with monthly payments much like regular health or car insurance.

Marketing

In the first ten years, Pre-Paid Legal used typical marketing strategies copied from the insurance industry to sell its legal insurance. Later, Stonecipher took a friend’s advice and used multi-level marketing in selling the company.

The business doubled. Later, Pre-Paid fine-tuned the commission system for its sales associates. By 1987, the company had over 200,000 sales associates who were all independent contractors.

Later, the company decentralized the distributors by promoting those on top into regional vice-presidents. They were to be responsible for the training of sales associates in their areas.

In 1997, the company began conducting one-day classroom and field training program for its sales associates. The program greatly helped to increase the productivity of their sales associates.

Legal service plans

Pre-Paid Legal had designed several legal plans for their various customers who had various legal needs. One of their early best-sellers is the Family Plan.

The Family Plan allowed customers to have preventive legal services with perks such as unlimited toll-free phone consultations, correspondence, will preparation, and legal documents review.

The plan also covered trial defense, IRS audit assistance, and motor vehicle legal services.

The Commercial Driver Legal Plan is designed specifically for all drivers of commercial vehicles. The benefits listed include legal assistance in cases of moving and nonmoving violations, arrest and bail bonds, tragic accident defense, car rental discounts and ambulance services.

The company’s Law Officers Legal Plan had the many benefits in the Family Plan plus 24-hour emergency access to attorneys and legal assistance for any administrative hearings.

The Small Business Legal Plan was developed for small businesses with a maximum of 15 employees and no more than $250,000 net annual income.

These business companies received limited legal correspondence for debt collection or other business disputes, limited document reviews, certain trial benefits (which increased each year the contract is renewed) and other limited legal consultations.

There were two other plans added and targeted for groups. One is the School Teachers Legal Plan to help teachers facing administrative hearings.

Later, the company worked with a CPA firm to introduce its Tax and Financial Services Plan. This is designed to help Pre-Paid Legal sales associates receive the legal advice needed to prepare their state and federal income tax forms.

Outlook

All in all, Pre-Paid Legal, Inc. had a very colorful history, including its beginning and the total concept of the company. With MLM working perfectly for its marketing, the future still looks good for a company selling products that are concepts written on paper.
